Ease of publishing

Originally the concept of the web was that everyone could publish, connect, communicate. The truth was that provided you could write HTML you could have a website, and your voice could be heard. Conforming to this belief are most universities - they provide their students with webspace, yet their students do not make use of this space to create personal web pages (John Dale). It was the appearance of weblogs which represented a reinvention of the open-publishing philosophy of the web. Initially the early weblogs were made by web-enthusiasts – those who knew how to code a web page. However since the arrival of software such as Blogger the barriers to entering and owning a weblog are very low indeed. You just type your content into the WYSIWYG editor, press the Publish button – the copy is inserted into the template and FTP-ed to a server. The software provider even hosts your weblog for you. These new web-based tools enabled individuals with little or no technical expertise to to create weblogs easily and quickly. The weblog bandwagon-jumping turned into an explosion.
