No culture in academia

[see: The Written World]

Steve Jobs said: "The only problem with Microsoft is they have no taste. In the sense that they don't think of any original ideas and bring any culture into their products. I am saddened by the fact that Microsoft make really third rate products."

I am going to focus on this excerpt: they don't bring any culture into their products. This is possibly going to be the central tenet of my PhD studies: that culture exists, and academia exists, and the overlap is where students reside (and learning occurs). Students bring culture with them, and yet the academic environment is reluctant to embrace culture. The academic environment is unique and separate from culture, and exists to imbue students with academic rigor and discourse. This form of discourse is bound in discipline and regulation which are completely contrary to popular culture which favours self-expression, creative freedom, and individuality. Will academia yield to popular culture and embrace the new discourse?
