Tagging as identity

The peripetatic activity which the hyperlinked architecture of the web encourages implies that many online encounters will be fortuitious. Increasingly though many will be intentional - with interest and peer groups being actively sought. The ease of finding interest and peer groups online is facilitated by the increasing willingness of web-users to tag themselves (their online profiles), and their online creations and submissions. These tags form part of their online identity, part of their distributed online presence. In an online context those things you are interested in lead you to peers and/or interest groups. Your identity, online, emerges from your associations and connections, and your interests. Tagging facilitates this, by becoming an expression of your online self. You are actively categorising your online self. Which other people can pick up on.
